These Home Folks Have Gone on to Glory

Marguerite Hall went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2010.  A memorial service will be held in St. Edward, Nebraska on April 17th.

A quiet, shy lady, she was a large part of what made the Hospitality Home a "home away from home" with her meals and snacks.  The photo at left was taken in May 1990 when she was Queen for the day at the reunion in San Diego.

Marguerite Hall came to Layne's Hospitality Home in 1949, just before Christmas. She had come to San Diego from Hastings, Nebraska to visit Viola and Henrietta Lightner. After going to services at the Home a few times, she learned that they needed someone to do the cleaning and dusting, applied for and got the job. A Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were doing the cooking then, but later, Marguerite took over that part too.

She worked at the Home until it was closed in 1975.

April 21, 2010:  Marguerite's niece, Cindy Lisko, sent us a copy of the Memorial Folder.  To see it, click here.

The chauffeur at left is James Ernest "Arkie" Radford, who is now gone, but not forgotten.

Arkie was a very outgoing person, and his wife Eunice was very quiet.  Arkie loved to tell jokes and he was good at it.  The funniest one I remember was "on" him.  We were standing around the kitchen table at the Home one Sunday evening and Arkie had us laughing at his latest one when Eunice spoke up and said, "Honey, that's not the way it was in the joke book!"  When she realized what she'd done she was really embarrassed - and so was her husband!

His obituary can be found here.

A special friend has gone to Glory
Virginia Gonzales Hayden was a volunteer at the Home - I have no idea how long - and Howard & I really appreciated her gentle spirit.  She taught me how to make tacos  and she loved our babies, Larry and Janet.  When we heard of her death, my first thought was that she is now enjoying her own baby that was stillborn. ~Marge
