Carl Seaton's
Cruise to Alaska

August 31 to September 7, 2003
Carl is my big brother! My brother, Carl Seaton of Olathe, Kansas, sailed Alaska's "Inside Passage" from Vancouver, British Columbia to Hubbard Glacier, then south again, stopping off at Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan.  He and his good friend Richard Finehart shared a cabin.  Dick lives near Brownsville, Texas.

Howard and I live in Klawock, on Prince of Wales Island in southern southeastern Alaska, not far from Ketchikan -- as the crow flies.  But it's a 3-hour ferry ride, so we came over the day before in order to be there when Carl's ship came in.  Howard took a couple of the pictures from 4th story window of our room in the Super 8 Motel.  Howard served as chauffeur and photographer as we all did the tourist thing.  It rained some, but not enough to bother us.

Ketchikan lived up to its rainy reputation as the ship arrived The view from the window is neat
The Royal Caribbean "Vision of the Seas" arrived in Ketchikan at 8:00 AM on Friday, August 5. View of the ship from our motel room; notice the little float plane at left.
The vacationer Our ferry looks like a toy next to a cruise ship!
Carl, wearing his Kansas City Royals cap.  His favorite recreation on board ship was walking and playing ping-pong. The ship is huge!  Carl said it extends only 25 feet below the surface, and has stabilizers so it doesn't rock from side to side.
Dick and Carl used the phones to call home This is a "clan house" - the totem poles tell stories
Dick Finehart and Marge Marshall, resting in the Ketchikan ferry terminal. We toured two totem parks.  This one is north of town.  The other is at Saxman, south of town.
Dolly's house is furnished as it was in the '30s, linoleum and all Creek Street held lots of salmon swimming upstream
"Dolly's House" is in the Creek Street area,  Ketchikan's former "red light district." The bridge where Creek Street
flows into the harbor.

Carl's stateroom is in the bow (front), which is on the left in this picture.  Visitors can't tour the cruise ship because of security issues. Breakfast over the newspaper

Howard and I had halibut sandwiches for lunch

After we took Carl and Dick back to the ship, we had lunch in the Cape Fox Lodge. We had a great view of the Vision of the Seas.

Carl says it's the first time he has ever come home rested after a vacation.  What a revolutionary idea!  We may have to try it sometime!
